Morocco

the Great Desert

From north to desert

For this three-week Moroccan road trip, we took our campervan off the beaten path, diving into wild landscapes, remote camp spots, and rugged mountain passes. Kevin crossed over solo by ferry from Spain with the van, while Liset and Lovi, joined him by plane.
From the green valleys of Chefchaouen to the vastness of the Sahara, we found unforgettable wild camping spots and glimpses of Morocco that we’ll never forget.

Though off-grid camping might sound tough here, we found safe, quiet spots to settle into nature. We’re excited to share how accessible this way of exploring is—even with kids—and help you discover Morocco’s hidden places for yourself.

The Blue City Chefchaouen

In the Rif Mountains of Morocco you will find the famous Blue City Chefchaouen, the most photogenic town in Africa. The old medina of Chefchaouen is painted entirely blue and white and is a maze of narrow alleys full of colorful decorations. The atmosphere is very relaxed compared to other cities in Morocco and that makes it the perfect place to start your trip. The blue paint has its roots in Jewish tradition, symbolizing the sky and heaven, and the town has been painting itself this way for centuries.

Although the entire medina is photogenic, there is a route that is extra decorated with colorful flower pots, carpets and beautiful corners. This route through narrow streets is 800 meters and is actually THE street you should visit. During the day it can be quite busy here and everyone tries to take the best pictures, so go as early as possible.

If you’re up for a bit of hiking, you can take a short 15 minutes trail up to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view of the blue city against the green of the Rif Mountains.

A Quiet Lakeside Paradise

As we continued, we found a peaceful lakeside spot that felt like a hidden oasis, far from any crowds. It was everything we love about van life: just us, nature, and a few friendly dogs that quickly adopted us. A truly off-grid moment, with nothing but the sound of the lake and a sky full of stars.

Through the Atlas Mountains

Our first 4×4 adventure took us deep into the Atlas Mountains, where it honestly felt like we’d stepped back a few hundred years. The mountain villages we passed looked as if they hadn’t changed in generations — small, clay-brick homes that blended into the earth, locals riding donkeys, and landscapes full of winding, muddy paths carved through rocky hillsides. Life here seemed very simple, with scenes of farmers working by hand in their fields and kids waving as we passed through their towns.

This road was sometimes a kind of a challenge, but it was worth every bump for the views.

Because wildcamping was no option on the road, we went to a gîte, a family-run guesthouse. Here, we were warmly welcomed and treated to our first taste of Moroccan hospitality. Sitting together, with our first tagine and sweet mint tea, sharing stories with locals, made this stop one of the remarkable highlights of our trip.

The High Pass Tizi n'Tichka & Ait Ben Haddou

As we made our way out of the High Atlas, we took the winding Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of the most iconic routes in Morocco. This high mountain pass connects Marrakech to the southern oases and winds its way through dramatic rocky landscapes, lush valleys, and scattered Berber villages clinging to the hillsides.

As we climbed higher, the landscape kept changing—it got cooler, and the colors around us seemed to pop more with every turn. It’s the kind of drive where you just have to stop now and then to soak it all in. If you’re heading toward the High Atlas, this road is a must—it’s more than just a way to get from A to B; it’s part of the adventure.

Half way, we found a secluded paradise valley between mountain hills, with views over red clay villages. This must be our place for the night!

The next day we continued our way to Ait Ben Haddou, a historic village made of red clay. This place is famous for good reason, an impressive sandcastle-like structure rising out of the desert, with walls that seem to change color with the sunset. The place looks like it’s straight out of a movie (and it is), so wandering around here was like a trip back in time.

Ready set.. Gas!

After visiting Ait Ben Haddou we headed down south. While driving through Morocco’s remote desert, we stopped at the ‘Hills Have Eyes’ Gas Station; a station that felt like it was straight out of a movie. It was old, quiet, and surrounded by nothing but empty roads and sand. The pumps looked worn, and the little shop had just the basics. It might not seem like much, but places like this are essential when you’re far from everything—and they add to the adventure of exploring Morocco.

Not far from the gas station we found a remote and peaceful paradise to set up camp for the night. Surrounded by rugged desert hills, it felt like a fitting extension of the eerie yet beautiful vibe of the area.

The Sahara: offroad from West to East

The next morning we made our way to Foam Zguid, where we prepared ourselves for the challenging route across the Sahara. However, there’s also a desert highway to Merzouga, we decided to travel across the Sahara from Foam Zguid, to Mhamid and then on to Merzouga. We drove along rocky paths and sand dunes, finding our way through one of the quietest, most desolate places we’d ever seen. The Sahara surprised us, with huge sand dunes but also mountains, rock-strewn fields, and endless stretches of emptiness. Crossing over the dry lake Irique made this desert road even more special.

Our first desert camp was set against the backdrop of red rocky mountains. The surrounding landscape felt untouched, offering a calm and restful start to our time in the desert.

A Hidden Oasis in the Heart of the Desert

Before reaching M’hamid, we stopped at L’Oasis Sacrée. True to its name, it’s a serene oasis in the desert, dotted with palm trees and small streams. There’s a simple terrace where you can grab a drink and relax, making it a perfect place to take a break from the dusty trails.

Leaving M’hamid behind, we set off on the desert road toward Merzouga, where the landscape began to shift dramatically. The dunes grew larger and softer, showcasing the incredible diversity of the Sahara. After navigating the rocky stretches earlier, we were relieved to find that our VW handled the softer sands with ease. Confident in our vehicle’s capability, we decided to camp amidst the dunes. That evening, we found a breathtaking spot right at the edge of the sands, surrounded by endless waves of golden desert as far as the eye could see. It was a peaceful and unforgettable night in the heart of the Sahara.

As we reached Merzouga, the big dunes gave way to wide plains and desert mountains. Looking back, it was amazing to see the landscapes we had just crossed. This was our last stop in the quiet remoteness of the desert before returning to busier areas. We camped on a rocky spot in the desert—a stunning location, though quite windy.

Arriving in Merzouga marked the end of our desert adventure. It was the perfect place to regroup after a week of remote exploration. To treat ourselves, we found a beautiful riad where we could relax and recharge. The comfort of soft beds, warm showers, swimming pool and delicious local meals felt like a luxury after our time camping in the desert. It was the ideal way to end our journey through the stunning and varied landscapes of the Sahara.

Gara Medouar: Camping in the “Desert Crater”

We left Merzouga and drove up North to our next impressive camp spot. If you ever want to camp in a kind of crater, you have to visit Gara Medouar. It’s a huge ring of rock in the middle of nowhere that honestly looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. It’s often mistaken for a volcano, but it’s actually a natural rock formation shaped like a crater. When you’re standing there, you can see why it’s popular in movies (like The Mummy). The place has this wild, almost spooky vibe to it, like you’ve stumbled across a hidden fortress in the desert.

Camping there felt unreal. As the sun set, the colors on the rock shifted, and the place fell completely silent. For one night, it was like our own secret corner of the desert.

Marrakesh: A Taste of City Life

Heading up north, we reached Marrakesh. After 1,5 week of remoteness we were ready for some more chaotic in the lively city. It was a brief dive into Moroccan city life: the souks (markets), the Koutoubia Mosque and the Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. To escape the hustle and bustle of Marrakech we went to one of the many rooftop bars. These are often located in the middle of the busy medina, but once you are at the top you are in an oasis of peace.

After a day of exploring, we relaxed in the riad’s courtyard garden, feeling recharged and ready for the last part – heading back home.
